Overview of Copy and Paste

You can copy a complete layer or a part of in image on a layer. To copy a part of an image use the selection or the mask tools.

Once the image, or part of an image, is selected you can then use the cut, copy or paste tools. These can be accessed from the toolbar or you can use the standard keyboard short cuts: CTRL-X, CTRL-C and CTRL-V for cut, copy and paste respectively. You can also use the menu items in the EDIT menu.

When you paste the copied image it will be copied into a new layer. The copy will be exact and will be on top of your original so you might think that the copy did not work. The copy can be moved into the correct place.

To MOVE your new image use the MOVE tool. You will find this on the picture menu bar. Use the Right Mouse Button to move the image.

To ROTATE or SCALE your image use the filter / distort / rotate. Note that this works around the centre of the page. You may need to move your image to the centre first, the rotate or scale it, and then move it to where you need it. Hint: turn on the Cross Hair drawing guide to help you locate the centre precisely.

Masking

If you want to copy a small part of your image then you will need to use the MASK tools to select the part of the image you require first. This requires several steps:

1. Fom the menu Mask select Enable Mask, Display MAsk and Clear Mask.

2. Select a brush from the Art Tools - Masking Tools brush set. For example use the Mask Hard Edge Brush.

3. Draw on your image and select the entire part you want to copy.

4. This will mask this part OUT - but we want the opposite We want to mask this part IN. Do this using the Mask Menu INVERT the mask.

5. Now when you do a copy the part you selected will be copied.

6. CTRL-V will paste this copy into a new layer and you can then move it into position using the MOVE tool.

Selection

You can select a rectangular part of your drawing using the select tool and copy just the selected part.

1. Use the select tool and draw a rectangle over the area you wish to keep using the RIGHT mouse button. Click on the starting point (e.g. the top left corner) and then drag the mouse until the rectangle is the correct size. If you make a mistake simply redraw the rectangle.

2. Reposition the cursor inside of the new rectangular selection. Use the Right Mouse button and click. A drop down menu will appear. Select Copy Selection.

IMPORTANT: Do not use CTRL-C as this will not copy the selected area. You must use the drop down menu copy option.

3. Paste the copied image using one of the usual CTRL-V, menu Edit / Paste, or  the toolbar paste icon methods.
