TwistedBrush User Guide

Brush Creation Basic Steps

TwistedBrush is all about fun. You don't have to be a brush guru to play with effects.

1. Click the "Brush Effects Panel" icon.
2. Pick a favorite brush.
3. Change something in the panel.
4. Try painting a few strokes.

Did you get a surprising result? Save it if you like it. Otherwise, change something else. Don't worry, you aren't changing the original brush. At the end of this topic, you'll find details on how to to save what you created.

Just changing the Category and the Properties at the top of the panel can be very entertaining. Also, don't overlook the "Effects Menu." It's an easy way to instantly swap effects layers.

The following links present additional Brush Design information that's available on the Pixarra Forum to date, 7-2-06.

Topic 1094 is a basic design tutorial. To make good use of this tutorial, you will need to study this Prelim Topic. Topic 676 provides long lists of Brush Effects and Envelopes and some definitions of both. You can skip Topic 1079 for now. It is just a suggested change, but may be helpful later in understanding the Effects.

Click the Brush Effects Panel icon to open the Panel. All design and modification is done within this Panel. Brush design starts with a CORE BRUSH and a VARIATION of that brush. These choices are made from the two drop-downs at the top of the Panel. These two choices establish the basic characteristics of your brush. Try clicking Reset Effects in the Effects Menu. Select a dark Active Color with Density and Opacity sliders all the way to the right. Now take a couple strokes. What you see is the Core Brush and the particular Variation. At this point, there are no effects modifying the Core Brush.

Now you can begin to modify the Core Brush by applying Effects in column one of the Effects Panel. Up to twelve layers of Effects can be applied, each one further modifying the cumulative Effects of the Layers above it. The first Effect modifies the Core Brush in some way. Try a couple strokes to see the changed brush stroke. The next Effect modifies this first modification, and so on. There are lots of Effects to be applied in a mind-boggling number of combinations. To make it even more interesting, how each Effect is applied is modified by the Envelope selected in Column two.

(Special thanks to CliffL for gathering much of the Brush Effects information!!!)
